Commotion rages on in Deido-Douala, roads barricaded as soldiers arrest nearly 40

Parts of Douala in the Littoral region of Cameroon have been tense for the past days as a gang known as ‘Les Microbes’ continues to terrorise locals.

On Thursday, the group manifested at the Cite CICAM and Ndokoti neighborhoods where they vandalised property and attacked civilians. This past weekend was the turn of Deido.

Residents however came out en masse with clubs, pushing back the group.

Addressing the press today, Littoral governor, Samuel Ivaha Diboua said some 39 of them were behind bars.

The 25 arrested by the police and 14 by gendarmes he said are held as a preventive measure.

“… the law gives me the possibility to do it…” The governor explained.

To the administrator, full cooperation of the population is needed to ensure calm in the town. This he added, does not mean vigilantes are there to replace the police.

The situation however is yet to be brought under control.

“All the entrances of the Deido neighborhood in Douala have been blocked due to the fear that the group that came an robbed yesterday may come again…” A local tells Mimi Mefo Info.

The group’s next move remains uncertain as locals accuse security forces of not paying enough attention to the situation.
