HUGO BROOS USED AN UNDERRATED TEAM TO LIFT AFCON 2017, AFTER 7 PLAYERS TURNED DOWN CAMEROON

Cameroon’s supremacy in AFCON 2017 was unprecedented. The build up to the tournament was catas.trophic.

7 players named in the provisional squad turned down their call up;

André Onana (Ajax d’Amsterdam), Guy Roland Ndy Assembe (Nancy), Allan Nyom (West Bromwich), André Zambo Anguissa (Olympique Marseille), Ibrahim Amadou (Lille) , Joel Matip (Liverpool), Maxime Poundje (Bordeaux)

Choupo Moting had for long opted to stay with Shalke .

These players were worried about losing their places in the starting line-ups of their respective teams.

The incredible tactician Hugo Broos had no choice. He had to deal with the disappointment and work with the handy players.

Cameroon VS Burkina Faso (1-1)

Ondoa was the regular goalkeeper

In the defence he used Teikeu and Ngadeu Oyongo Bitolo (left back) and Mabouka (Right back)

In the midfield, he used Sebastien Sieni, Clinton Njie, Bassogog and Mandjeck

As forwards, he fieded Zoua and Moukandjo

The only substitutions were Edgar Salli for Njie and Toko Ekambi for Bassogog

Match 2: CAMEROON BEAT GUINEA BISSAU 2-1

In this match, Hugo Broos made minor changes

He replaced Mabouka and fielded Fai Collins as a starter.

He kept Zoua resting and fielded Aboubakar, who was later substituted with Ndip Tambe.

Ngadeu and Siani scored for Cameroon

Match 3: CAMEROON DREW 0-0 WITH GABON

Hugo Broos opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation

He made slight changes in the defence. Fai, Teikeu, Oyongo were maintained. Nkoulou replaced Ngadeu, while Ngadeu played as a midfielder with Siani, Bassogog, Moukandjo and Salli. Ndip Tambe was the lone center forward.

Ndip Tambe was later replaced with Aboubakar Vincent.

Cameroon qualified with 5 points

QUARTER FINALS: CAMEROON BEAT SENEGAL ON PENALTIES

Hugo bross went back to the defence line against Guinea Bissau consisting Fai, Ngadeu, Teikeu and Oyongo

In the midfield, he fielded Djoum and Siani.

He still relied on Ndip Tambe as center forward. It’s unimaginable that Aboubakar was a substitute.

Cameroon were level 0-0 in regular time.

During penalties, Fabrice Ondoa awe-inspiringly stopped Sadio Mané’s penalty.

After Cameroon won a penalty shootout to eliminate heavy favourites Senegal in their last-eight match, Broos and his men started to believe they could go all the way.

SEMI FINALS: CAMEROON BEAT GHANA 2-0

Hugo Broos had found his surefire defence line. Mabouka was no longer part of his plan. Fai Collins had been super impressive.

Bassogog was on fire. He was a key player used by Hugo Broos. He was reliant on his pace and exceptional dribbling skills. Zoua was equally paired with Moukandjo in his offensive strategy. Ndip Tambe was the center forward. Aboubakar came in as a substitute.

Ngadeu scored the first goal and Bassogog demolished the Ghanaian team in the 93rd minute.

FINALS : CAMEROON VS EGYPT (2-1)

This was an unbelievable showdown. Cameroon conceded in the 22nd minute. Their hopes were not dwindled. Hugo Broos replaced Teikeu with Nkoulou.

Nkoulou came in and scored in the 59th minute, through Moukandjo’s cross.

Ndip Tambe was still a starter. He was replaced with Aboubakar Vincent, who scored in the 88th minute.

Hugo Broos applauds the collectivity of the team that won the 2017 AFCON. On BBC Sports, he said;

“I don’t have 23 players, I have 23 friends,”

This was the reason we won the cup, because of the spirit in our camp,” Broos added.

“The guys who were on the bench were happy – and the players who came off the bench decided the game.”
