“The truth shall always prevail, it’s just a matter of time”
These were the 11 words shared with the picture of opppsition leader Maurice Kamto by the country’s election body ELECAM in the final hours of Tuesday June 23rd 2020.
In any other country, those words supposedly from an opposition leader echoed by what is suppose to be non-partisan elections management body would have made no news, but in Cameroon it has sent social media into a frenzy
Hundreds of users were quick to take to the comment section of ELECAM’s Facebook page to express shock, surprise, disbelief and some even insinuate the accaount was hacked at the late night message from the agency.
For an election agency which has been heavily criticized by Cameroonians for lacking in neutrality in managing elections in the country as most of its members are former Senior officials of the ruling CPDM, sharing a message about truth and fate from a troublesome opposition figure out of an election season is simply unimaginable.
TeboPost has quickly checked all official accounts of opppstion leader Maurice Kamto and the words and image aren’t shared in any of them and it’s not yet clear if the words are actually coming from the MRC leader
But sharing them is itself itself a big deal
Coming amidst talks of constitutional changes which might bar Kamto from running for President in future takes center stage, the message fits squarely to the kind of message the opppstion leader has been trumpeting recently about the need for prevent any sham constitutional arrangement to make room for an effortless handing over of power from Biya to his handpicked successor
But while many continue to digest the meaning and intention behind the deeply unexpected message from ELCAMS, Cameroonians are busy making sense if it on social media
