Journal of Global Neurosurgery: Cameroon’s Ignatius Esene Appointed Deputy Editor-In-Chief

Cameroonian-born Medical Doctor, Ignatius Esene, MD, M.Sc, Ph.D., MPH, has been appointed as Deputy Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Global Neurosurgery.

“As a Neurosurgeon and a Global Health practitioner, my primary goal is to ensure the delivery of quality, timely, safe, and affordable neurosurgical care to all who need it irrespective of their socio-economic status,” Dr. Esene said in reaction to his appointment.

Currently, most of the Research Evidence for optimal patient care comes from high-income countries whereas most patients are from low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs).

“Our goal in the journal is to narrow this research gap by empowering neurosurgeons from LMICs (capacity building) and promoting and supporting research from these countries; -this is where I fit in,” he concluded.

Dr. Ignatius N. Esene is currently the Consultant Neurological Surgeon, Head of Neurosurgery, Emergency & Theatre Units, Garoua Regional Hospital, Cameroon. He is a Lecturer of Neurosurgery at IBNC, Antalya, Turkey, and Teaches Neurosurgery at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Bamenda, Cameroon.

Dr. Esene is the pioneer Chair of Young African Neurosurgeons Forum (Young CAANS); Co-Chair, Young Neurosurgeons Forum of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies; Neurosurgery Research Equity Lead of the Global Neurosurgery Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and Young Neurosurgeons Liaison at Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery (FIENS).

He is equally a member of the Ethics and Medical-Legal Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.

Dr. Ignatius Esene graduated from CCCAST Bambili as the Valedictorian (25 Points at GCE).

He obtained his Medical Doctorate Degree from Cameroon and was awarded the Academy of Research and Higher Education scholarship to undertake a Master’s in Public Health (in Brussels, Belgium) which he obtained with a Magna Cum Laude (Grande Distinction).

He then proceeded to Cairo for his residency in Neurosurgery. He obtained a Masters in Neurosurgery/Neurology (cum laude) and Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) in Neurological Surgery under the aegis of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and auspices of the Cameroonian government.

He equally holds Postgraduate Certificates/Diplomas in Health Economics, International Health, Advanced Research Methods, Paediatric Neuro-Oncology, Skull Base, and Neuro-Vascular Surgery (from University of Wiscon-Madison, USA). He has received a myriad of accolades, travel/boarding grants, and a manifold of scholarships (WFNS Foundation Scholarship, FIENS-Basset Global Neurosurgery Fellowship, NIH-StrokeNet Fellowship, InWEnt-Health Division Grant).
