Mountain race explosions: victims with severe burns still under medical care

The Director of the Buea regional hospital, Dr Mokake Martin, has said they are working to ensure that all victims of the February 25 explosions during the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope are discharged.

He said 6 victims out of the 24 who were received on the day of the incident are still in their care due to the seriousness of the burns they suffered. They suffered first and second degree burns.

“Among the 24 casualties that we received, there were several minor injuries,” Dr Mokake indicated. “On the same day, we liberated more than half of the victims and today, we are left with just 6 persons.”

The health official added that three more patients will be discharged soon, highlighting that all bills are being handled by the Ministry of Health.

“All of the victims are having their treatment and support without paying. The Minister of Health, gave us the order to take care of the cases without payment,” Dr Mokake added.

It is worth noting that the victims, two athletes and three children, with the youngest aged 1 year six months, are all civilians.

In spite of the explosions, the race went on unperturbed. Adamu Isa Buba emerged winner in the men’s category while Tatah Carine was first in the women’s category.
